Cheapest Days to Fly in December

For the best rates, search for flights at least 21 days in advance.

Everyone wants to be home for the holidays. But with the cost of air travel increasing with every passing season, it may feel all but impossible to save some money. You can save money when you book your trip at least 21 days prior to your desired travel date and when you search for early morning or late night flights. Combine different travel dates as well as airport locations to save even more money.

Days of the Week

When searching for an airline ticket in December, search for one that departs on a Saturday. Rick Seaney, a leading U.S. expert on airfare, explained to ABC News that Saturdays are one of the cheapest days to fly during the week. He also recommended purchasing tickets earlier in the week, either on Monday or Tuesday, to avoid fare hikes that tend to occur during the end of the week. He also advised against flying on Sundays, as it’s considered one of the most expensive days to fly during the week.

Avoid the Rush

To avoid the holiday rush, and to save more money, be sure to book your travel at least 21 days in advance. Seaney recommended searching for airfare tickets for the holidays, such as Christmas, at least four months prior to your desired travel date. This will help save you money as as airlines hike fares due to fuel costs and other surcharges.

Travel Before the Holiday

If you have no choice but to book a last-minute trip, Priceline suggests booking your trip either six or seven days prior to the holiday or, if possible, the day before. Most people will plan to travel either the Friday or Saturday before a major holiday. Airlines may also hike prices during these two days.

Set Up Alerts

To find the cheapest days to fly in December, visit a travel or airline website and set up email and/or text message alerts at least three or four months prior to your trip. Although the airlines’ main goal is to have you pay the most money for a ticket, you may be able to find cheaper airfares judging by the fluctuation of deals the airline or travel company provides.
